Free or Open source Software to Install on Your Computer

- Photostory 3–Create digital stories with sound, music and pictures on the timeline. Older program from Microsoft, originally designed for Windows XP but still works on new Microsoft operating systems.

- Tux Typing–Typing tutor program
- Type Faster–Typing tutor program (has a little bit better progression for the introduction of keys than Tux Typing.
- Tux Paint–is a free, award-winning drawing program for children ages 3 to 12 (for example, preschool and K-6).
- Anagramarama–This anagram game challenges you to guess as many words as possible in the time available.
- Childsplay–Childsplay can be used at home, kindergartens and pre-schools. Childsplay is a fun and safe way to let young children use the computer and at the same time teach them math, letters of the alphabet, spelling, eye-hand coordination, etc.
- Learn Letters–Learn Letters teaches children to know and make the 26 letters of the alphabet. Using the shapes the letters have in common, the child is guided as he combines shapes to make the lower case letters of the alphabet. Learning the names and shapes of the letters of the alphabet is the first step to reading.
- Infrarecorder— is a free CD/DVD burning solution for Microsoft Windows. It offers a wide range of powerful features; all through an easy to use application interface and Windows Explorer integration.
- Microsoft Math Worksheet Generator – Generates random Math sums in word or HTML format. Also supports Linear equations, quadratic Equations,
Simultaenious Equations and Statistical operations. - Paint.net—Image editing and graphics program. Requires dotnet, please install dotnet(included here) before installing Paint.net
- Reken Test–supports basic arithmetic operations like addition and subtraction, the multiplication tables and so on, as well as more advanced arithmetic operations like decimals, money problems, percentages and fractions.
- Sebran–It’s never too early for your child to become familiar with letters and numbers. Sebran’s ABC’s colorful pictures, pleasant music, and gentle games teach letters, numbers, simple math, and rudiments of reading.
- Minisebran— is a free suite of early learning games for kids 2-6 years old . It
includes eight different exercises, including doodle drawing exercises and very
simple games to get to know the numbers and letters, and learning to use the
keyboard. Needs Microsoft’s dotnet to install and run. - Seterra–Using the free map quiz game Seterra, you can learn the geography of Europe, the locations of the US states and state capitals, the provinces of China, countries, flags and capitals of Africa, South America and Asia, mountains, volcanoes and much more.
- 7zip–Unzip and zip files, Open source Windows utility for manipulating archives. Formats 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR are supported fully, other formats can be unpacked.
- Media Player Classic–Versitile media player contains many codecs to enable playing of almost any video file. MPC-HC is an extremely light-weight media player for Windows. The player supports all common video and audio file formats available for playback.
- VLC media player–Simple, fast and powerful media player. Plays everything: Files, Discs, Webcams, Devices and Streams. Plays most codecs with no codec packs needed: MPEG 2, DivX, H.264, MKV, WebM, WMV, MP3… Can do media conversion and streaming.
- Gcompris— is a high quality educational software suite comprising of numerous activities for children aged 2 to 10. Some of the activities are game orientated, but nonetheless still educational. Below you can find a list of categories with some of the activities available in that category.
- Skeleton—SEN teacher The game is a simple interactive quiz in which the larger bones of the human skeleton must be labelled using drag and drop. Bone names are read aloud on selection.
- Clock Model—SEN teacher Clear and simple interactive clock model with draggable clock hands. The hour hand is correctly positioned automatically after movements to the minute hand are made – the model is intended primarily to reinforce this difficult concept.A basic quiz in which various random times must be set is also included, as is a real-time clock. Press ‘s’ to access settings – this enables Roman numerals to be used on the clockface and also provides the option to display digital time alongside the analogue.
- Memory Game—SEN teacher Simple activity in which short sequences of coloured shapes must be repeated from memory. Five levels requiring recall of a single shape through to a sequence of five are provided. Final result is presented as the aggregate percentage of correctly entered shapes – where mistakes outnumber responses a 0% is given. The absolute number of mistakes made is also tracked.
- Artha Open Thesaurus–Artha is a handy thesaurus based on WordNet with distinct features like global hotkey look-up, passive desktop notifications, regular expression based search, etc.. Artha may be used as a free open-source replacement to the proprietary WordWeb Pro.
- Big Daddy Math Drills— is a simple but highly effective computer program that
can help children and others to learn their basic addition, subtraction, and
multiplication tables by heart. They were a great help to my children in gaining
speed, accuracy, and confidence in these essential basic arithmetic skills. If you use the keypad to answer the questions, the program may also turn you into an adding machine and data entry whirlwind. - Jletters–Helps young children or struggling readers learn the alphabet, click on the tile and hear a word that starts with the letter.
- Westpoint Bridge Designer–A national virtual bridge engineering contest with prizes for age 13 to grade 12,
but anyone can enter. Based on the award-winning West Point Bridge Designer client software, now open source through this project. Web site infrastructure supports worldwide participation in qualifying and semifinal rounds with a tiny administrative staff. - Veyon computer lab monitoring software–Manage and control computers from teacher’s (master) work station. This is an update to the iTalc computer lab management software, created by the same developer.

Gparted — is a free partition editor for graphically managing your disk partitions. With GParted you can resize, copy, and move partitions without data loss.
- Trinity Rescue Kit or TRK— is a free live Linux distribution that aims specifically at recovery and repair operations on Windows machines, but is equally usable for Linux recovery issues. Since version 3.4 it has an easy to use scrollable text menu that allows anyone who masters a keyboard and some English to perform maintenance and repair on a computer, ranging from password resetting over disk cleanup to virus scanning
